Tracing Your Ancestor Contest Winning Entry

Congratulations to our winner (user name Tester) in the "Tracing Your Ancestors Contest". Her  chosen ancestor, Sam Brown, Jr. will be traced back into the pre-Civil War era. Weekly updates of the findings will be posted on this forum under the topics"Tracing the Ancestors of Sam Brown". But first, Tester will complete a simple, information gathering questionnaire about her chosen ancestor.

Tester supplied the following information about her ancestor:
  • My grandfather, Sam Brown, Jr. resided in Burke County, Georgia.
  • He died around 1970.
  • I believe he was 80 years old at the time of his passing away.
  • He had sisters named Mamie Coleman, Ada Binns and I think Annie.
  • His father was Sam Brown, Sr. I can't recall his mother's name.
  • I will try to locate his obituary.

Based on the data supplied by Tester (user's name), Sam Brown Jr. was probably born around 1890. Thus, we began our search for him in the 1900 census.

Samuel Brown, black, male, son, born 1895, farm laborer,Georgia
Wesley Brown, black, male,son, born 1881, farm laborer,Georgia
Mary Brown, black, female, wife, born 1864, Georgia
Sam Brown, 1900 Census, Burke County, Georgia, ED 0017, Dwelling #83.

This census entry matched the family history given by Tester for her grandfather, Sam Brown.
