Surnames Taken by Former Slaves on Evans' Plantation
Evans
The 1870 Georgia federal census index was searched for a
William(Bill) Evans within the appropriate age range residing in
Hancock County. An entry was found for eighty- six year old
William Evans. In the actual census, William ( 86) and Dinah (82)
Evans shared a household. They resided in the Culverton District
of Hancock County, an area near Horeb Baptist Church and Little
Ogeechee River. All circumstantial evidence suggested that they
were husband and wife. Relationships were not recorded in the
1870 federal census and neither Dinah or William could be found
in 1880 to confirm their relationship. How Evans acquired William
and Dinah is not known at this time. However, he held them as
slaves in November 1828, the date they became members of Horeb
Church.

1870 Census, Hancock County Georgia,William
Evans, Dwelling#415
Living next door to William and Dinah Evans was a man named Allen
Evans. Evans' inventory listed a 42 year old Allen. That would
make him about 51 in the year 1870. Although there is a minor age
discrepancy, it is of little significance. Besides, other
evidence indicated that Allen Evans was the former slave of John
Evans. First, the Evans's surname clearly suggested that he might
be the Allen on John Evans' inventory. Second, his proximity to
William and Dinah Evans also supported this supposition. Third,
the presence of an 18 year old male named William in his
household suggested kinship between the older William and Allen.
Studies have shown that slaves and their descendants used first
names from generation to generation to denote kinship.
Twenty-one year old Caroline Evans lived near Allen Evans. Her
age closely matched that of the 16 year old Caroline on the
inventory. Caroline, a housekeeper, was born in Georgia.None of
the other names in her household matched those on Evans'
inventory.
Lewis
Sixty-five year old Sam and 65 year old Vinch Lewis lived near
Luke and Martha Daniels in the 1870 Hancock County federal
census. Evans owned a 60 year old Sam and a 53 year old Vinch.
Both Sam and Vinch Lewis were members of Horeb Baptist Church and
chose to disassociate themselves with it after slavery ended.
Their names appear successively on the church "Dismission List of
Colored Members". By 1880, Sam was a widow. He lived in a
household headed by his nephew, Morris Lewis.
Allen
Living in the same neighborhood with twenty-one year old Caroline
Evans was Cornelius Allen. Could this be the former 16 year old
Cornelius owned by John Evans? His age certainly matched that of
the Cornelius on the inventory. In 1870, twenty -three year old
Cornelius Allen headed a household with Elizabeth, M.A.,and
Martha. Marriage records documented his union with Elizabeth
Allen in 1867. The 1880 census identified M.A. as Mary. Besides
Mary and Martha, another daughter Millie was found in his 1880
household. Cornelius, Elizabeth and their children were all born
in Georgia.
Next to the census entry for Cornelius was a household headed by
Trial Allen. Evans did not own a Trial, but other names on the
inventory matched those in his household. Elvira, Andrew and
Crawford were all members of his household and names on Evans'
inventory. Their ages also fit the ages of slaves with matching
names on the inventory. This was a finding that could notbe just
mere coincidence. If Cornelius, Elvira, Andrew and Crawford were
indeed the slaves on the inventory, it was not unreasonable to
assume that other Evans slaves also took the Allen surname.(See
Broomfield)

1870 census entries were found for Cary and Robert Allen. Both
twenty- eight year old Cary and Robert Allen resided at Mount
Zion, a community in northern Hancock County. Their households
included: Insert census Robert lived in a household next to Cary.
Living next to Robert and Cary was Bobb Allen which was
incorrectly recorded as Bobb, Allen. His household consisted of
Abbie 55, Rabo 21, Susan, Julia, Serena and Allen. The names of
the children in his household exactly matched those of Abby on
Evans' inventory. This positively confirmed that Abby Allen was
the slave held by John Evans.

Broomfield
Elvy,Crawford and Andrew
Elvy(Elvira), Crawford and Andrew appeared in the 1870 census
household of Trial Allen under his surname. Ten years later, the
1880 census identified Elvira as Trial's wife. Crawford and
Andrew were no longer in their household. But, living next door
to Trial and Elvira was Andrew Broomfield and his wife
Angeline. His age coincided with the age of the Andrew found in
Trial Allen's 1870 household. Andrew Broomfield died of
appendicitis May 29, 1920. His death certificate named Elvira
Allen as his mother. Thus the seventeen year old Andrew in Trial
and Elvira Allens' 1870 household proved to be Andrew Broomfield.
Daniel
The names of Martha's children on Evans' inventory exactly
matched those of children enumerated in the 1870 census household
of Luke and Martha Daniel. Evans held as a slave 42 year old Luke
whose age approximated that of Luke Daniel. However, Martha and
Luke could not be found as a couple in the 1880 census. Luke
Daniel was now a widower who resided in nearby Warren County with
Polk Wynn. The census taker enumerated him as a sixty- five year
old farm laborer whose relationship to Wynn was not given. Ben
Barksdale and his wife Josephine lived near Luke Daniels.
Josephine Daniels married Ben Barksdale in August 1870. Wash
Daniel married Angeline. A marriage license was issued to Laura
Daniels and John Lightfoot December 24, 1877. Fourteen year old
Margaret on the inventory was probably the Margaret Daniel who
married German Shivers December 24, 1866. The couple lived near
Luke Daniel's household in 1870.

Tyus
Candis appeared in the 1870 census under the surname Tyus with
children listed on Evans'inventory. A Dick who would be the
approximate age of Richard Tyus appears on Evan's inventory. It
is well known that Dick is the common nickname for Richard.
Furthermore, the name Richard Tyus was found on Horeb's Church
"Dismission List of Colored Members". Tap on Evan's inventory is
the fifteen year old Taplin Tyus enumerated in Candis and Dick's
1880 household. A marriage record revealed that Rosetta Tyus
married Thomas Mapp. The 1900 census taker enumerated Candis as a
70 year old widow who had born 16 children with 11 still alive.

Beall(Bell)
Kisiah, Ellick,Jim, Betsy
Kisiah and her children Ellick, Jom
and Betsy were found in a household headed by Mishack Beall in
1870. Evans did not hold a slave named Mishack. Perhaps Mishack
was free or held by someone other than Evans. However, in 1867,
he was employed by A.M. Jackson, son in law of John A. Evans. The
1880 census confirmed that Mishack was Kesiah's husband. Their
1880 household included three more children, Isabelle, George and
Francis. Kesiah (Kizzie) was a widow by 1900.
