John A. Evans was a man of considerable means for his time. In 1860, 60 year old Evans, a planter born in Georgia, owned a 1000 acre plantation in Hancock County near the Little Ogeechee River. His personal property was valued at $98,000. Ten years earlier the 1850 federal census slave schedule enumerated 76 slaves by sex,age and race and 16 households on his plantation. This number had more than doubled from the 21 slaves attributed to him on the 1830 Tax Digest.

John Evans was deceased by August 1862, the date his will was probated. As customary, his property was inventoried and appraised. Ninety - two slaves were named and given a monetary value on the "Inventory and Appraisal". An old woman or man received a low appraisal value. A woman of child bearing age and a young healthy man received a high value.
